OC’s Dowland quits
over conduct issue
Obion County Central Athletic Director Craig Rogers said the recent resignation of assistant football coach Adam Dowland was due to “conduct unbecoming of a teacher/coach.”
The Rebel AD elected to give no other details publicly of the issue.
Dowland served as an aide to Shawn Jackson during the former Rebel head coach’s entire five-year tenure at OCCHS. His resignation of both his coaching and teaching duties was effective immediately, according to Rogers.
The move will reportedly open an immediate teaching spot in history for new Central head football coach Kevin Goltra, who was hired in December after three seasons at Kenwood High School — the last as that program’s head coach. He is expected to be on campus in the next few days and will be the center of attention at a reception sponsored by the Quarterback Club from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Rebel fieldhouse.
Goltra, who is in the final stages of putting together his staff, had previously confirmed that Mark Jackson, Billy Windsor and Neal Cruce would be the only holdovers from the previous Obion County Central staff.
Devil QB Garmon
California-bound
South Fulton High School quarterback JaQuay Garmon was to sign with Feather River College — a California juco — today.
Garmon was the lone player from Obion County who planned to ink on the first day of the national signing period.
The strong-armed 6-2, 190-pound signal-caller was a three-time all-district selection and a four-year starter for the Red Devils.
The Golden Eagles are located in the Quincy (California) community, according to a press release, and a member of the Nor Cal Division of the California Community College Athletic Association in the Mid Empire League.
Other area players who are set to sign today include Dresden’s Devan Raymer (Bethel) and Devon Jones of Lake County, who’ll ink with Austin Peay.
Knight featured
at Bethel event
Legendary college basketball coach and ESPN analyst Bobby Knight will be coming to Bethel University to speak at a school-sponsored banquet April 19.
Knight won 902 games as an NCAA Division I men’s basketball coach, most notably at Indiana, where he won three national championships. He is the third on the all-time win list for men’s college basketball.
Details will be released soon on sponsorships and individual tickets.
Magic’s Williams
speak to Scouts
Orlando Magic co-founder and motivational speaker Pat Williams will be the keynote speaker at the West Tennessee Area Council-Boy Scouts of America in Jackson 7 p.m. Thursday.
The fund-raising event will take place at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.
Williams, named one of the 50 most influential people in NBA history by Beckett in 1996.
All money raised stays in the West Tennessee Council, which consists of the 22 regional counties outside Shelby County.
