Personal bests start
UTM run season

The UT Martin cross country teams got off to a blazing start in its 2013 spring track opener over the weekend, taking part in the Southern Illinois Invitational at the SIU Recreation Center.
In the 3,000 meter run, Justin Morgan compiled a time of 9:05.79, followed by a time of 10:02.90 by Mark Graubner. Josiah Roberts (4:53.15) and Zach Phifer (4:57.69) both competed in the one mile run for the Skyhawk men’s squad.
A trio of Skyhawks battled in the 3,000 meter run on the women’s side, led by Amanda Wardlaw’s time of 11:00.13 with Alexandra Stover (12:00.44) and Kathryn Skaggs (12:13.72) close behind. Freshmen Kaycee Grimes and Abby Frantom each took part in the one mile run, finishing with times of 5:47.38 and 5:55.11, respectively.

Bobby Knight slated
for Bethel banquet

Legendary college basketball coach and ESPN analyst Bobby Knight will be coming to Bethel University to speak at a school-sponsored banquet April 19.
Knight won 902 games as an NCAA Division I men’s basketball coach, most notably at Indiana where he won three national championships. He is the third on the all-time win list for men’s college basketball.
Details will be released soon on sponsorships and individual tickets.

Magic’s Williams
speaking to scouts

Orlando Magic co-founder and motivational speaker Pat Williams will be the keynote speaker at the West Tennessee Area Council-Boy Scouts of America in Jackson 7 p.m. today.
The fund raising event will take place at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.
Williams, named one of the 50 most influential people in NBA history by Beckett in 1996, has also run 58 marathons and has 19 children, including 14 adopted, with his wife.
Tables for the event include $2,500 for eight seats; $1,250 for four; $600 for two; $300 for individuals; and $150 for a balcony seat.
All money raised stays in the West Tennessee Council, which consists of the 22 regional counties outside Shelby County.

Racers’ Jackson
accepts plea deal

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Murray State University basketball player Zaveral “Zay” Jackson has accepted a plea deal to charges of two charges of wanton endangerment.
The Paducah Sun reported that the 20-year-old Jackson, from Hammond, La., agreed to the deal Monday in McCracken County before special case Judge Craig Clymer.
Jackson was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment after a Sept. 10 incident in the parking lot of Murray’s Walmart.
Police say he hit Jason Clement with his car after an argument. The plea deal amended his charges to two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
Jackson originally pleaded guilty to first-degree wanton endangerment after facing two counts of second-degree assault. A judge rejected the deal, saying a 30-day jail sentence was too lenient. Jackson then withdrew the plea.
