Rebel teams adjust to odd date, time to swat Hornets twice

Obion Central might take a liking to Wednesday afternoon basketball.
Playing on an odd day and at an even odder time — the girls tipped off at 3:30 p.m. — both Rebel teams knocked off District 13AA foe South Gibson at Troy with a 69-40 girls’ decision and 60-57 boys’ verdict.
The make-up games had to be played on Wednesday because of their influence on the league standings and because no other day was available in the final week of the regular season.
The 13AA Tournament begins Saturday with play-in games, and the league’s brackets are still not finalized with games to be played today and Friday.
OC will close its season on Friday, traveling to Covington.
Both Charger girls’ and boys’ teams are ranked No. 2 in the latest Associated Press prep hoop polls.
The Central boys, set to be seeded seventh in the tournament, will then be back home on Saturday night at 7 to host Milan in a play-in game.
There is a logjam atop the 13AA girls’ standings with Covington, Westview and Central all set to host quarterfinal games on Monday, seedings and opponents to be hashed out over the next two days.
There will two girls’ and two boys’ play-in games Saturday on the higher seeds’ home floor, girls’ games beginning at 3 p.m. and boys’ at 7 p.m.
Higher seeds will then host the quarterfinals Monday (girls) and Tuesday (boys), all starting at 7 p.m.
In playing their second games in as many days this week, the Central girls found little resistance from South Gibson, while OC’s boys had to fight off the Hornets in the nightcap.
Brandi Goodman posted a double-double of 33 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Lady Rebs, now 24-6 overall and 15-2 in the league.
Shannon Wiggins, Ali McEwen and Dianna Flippen all had six points for OC, which led 31-15 at the half.
Goodman led a lopsided 41-19 rebound advantage for Central.
In the second game, the Rebels outscored SG 16-14 in the first period and 18-14 in both the third and fourth quarters, that 10-point overall margin overcoming the Hornets’ 15-8 advantage in the second frame.
Shaw Logan paced OC with 17 points and four assists, while Zack King added 10 points.
