Area authorities investigate Trenton murder
The Trenton Police De-partment is continuing an investigation into a murder that occurred either late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Responding to a call received at 12:03 p.m. Saturday, Trenton police arrived at a residence located at 510 Barnes Drive, where they discovered an unresponsive male in the bathtub.
First responders and Gibson County Ambulance Authority personnel pronounced Sylvain Barnett, 63, dead at the scene. The body was sent to Memphis for an autopsy. According to Trenton Police Chief Will Sanders, “Barnett had several stab wounds to the chest area, but it is up to the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.”
Investigators with the Trenton Police Department, along with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Team out of Nashville, processed the crime scene, working into the early morning hours Sunday. Numerous items of evidence were collected at the scene and have been submitted to the TBI Crime Lab in Nashville.
Trenton Police Depart-ment Lt. James Wilson and assistant chief Jeff McCoy canvassed the area and interviewed several witnesses on Saturday. The TPD planned to continue interviews on Sunday and today. Anyone who has information about the murder or who may have observed something in the area (510 Barnes Drive) Friday night or Saturday morning is requested to call the Trenton Police Department at (731) 855-1413.
The TPD is offering up to  a $1,000  reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the person or persons responsible for Barnett’s death.
“We will wait for the medical examiner’s report and test results from the TBI before anyone is charged in this crime,” explained Chief Sanders.
According to law enforcement officials, Trenton’s last murder was in 2009. Published in The Messenger 2.11.13
