Westview in top spot after win over Cavs

Posted: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 12:00 pm

When the day started on Friday, the Westview boys’ basketball team knew it would be playing Crockett County for the No. 2 seed in the District 13AA tournament.
By mid-afternoon that all changed, though, and the Chargers and Cavaliers instead played for the No. 1 seed after Covington was stripped of all of its wins for the season.
Westview beat Crockett County 75-65 to win the regular season district title and claim the top seed in the district tournament.
Westview’s prize for being the No. 1 seed — the Chargers must now play Covington tonight at 7 at Westview in a win-or-go-home game in the quarterfinals.
Gleason (3-24) won its play-in game on Saturday against Carroll Academy 70-30 to get the District 13A boys’ tournament started.
Greenfield got a 55-51 win over McKenzie Thursday night behind Jeremy Lannom’s 20 points.
The Class AA No. 7-ranked Lady Chargers secured the second seed on the girls’ side of the District 13AA tournament with a 91-47 beat-down of Crockett County on Friday.
Brittany Peoples led the Lady Yellowjackets over McKenzie on Thursday by the score of 50-34.
Westview 75, CC 65 (B)
Westview and CC played to a 22-all tie to end to first period before the Chargers put some breathing room between them and the Cavaliers in the second period.
Westview outscored CC 17-10 to take 39-32 at the half.
Crockett narrowed the gap in the third period with a 16-12 scoring margin to get within three.
Jazell Baker led the Chargers with 16 points, while Jordan Davis and Javier Gordon scored 15 points each.
Gleason 70, CA 30 (B)
The Bulldogs overcame a 17-13 deficit in the first period to beat Carroll Academy by 40 points in Saturday’s play-in game.
The Bulldogs held the Jaguars to five points or less in the last three periods of the game.
Gleason outscored Carroll Academy 21-5 in the second, 16-5 in the third and 20-3 in the final period.
The 70 points marked the most scored by the Bulldogs this season.
G’field 55, McKenzie 51 (B)
A 17-10 scoring margin by the Yellowjackets (16-7, 9-5) was just enough to hold off the Rebels for a four-point victory on Thursday.
Lannom’s game-high 20 points led the ’Jackets with Tony Robinson adding 13.
Westview 91, CC 47 (G)
Teddy Vincent and Tiffany Rechis poured in over 20 points each as the Lady Chargers geared up for a strong district tournament run.
Westview (24-4, 16-2) rolled out to a 26-9 first period lead and never looked back.
Libby Hart led the Lady Cavaliers with 19 points.
Both teams faced off again in the 13AA quarterfinals at Westview. Published in The WCP 2.12.13
