Leaders sought for WC Relay For Life

Posted: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 8:00 pm

The American Cancer Society is looking for some leaders in Weakley County.
Relay For Life, the signature fund raiser for the American Cancer Society, is gearing up for another successful local run.
Relay raised around $102,000 last year in Martin, with MTD alone raising $50,000, according to Linda Ramsey, site facilitator for the American Cancer Society’s CPS3 Research Study.
“The American Cancer Society would like to ask for your help again,” she said.
About 20 teams participated in the event in June 2012 and they held fund raisers throughout the year.
“It was a good year for Relay, but this year can be even better with your help,” she said.
Ms. Ramsey said CPS-3 “champions,” those who participated in the American Cancer Society’s recent CPS-3 study, were able to accomplish great things.
Relay offers them the opportunity to do something great again.
“We experienced such a great success with the CPS-3 study that the American Cancer Society truly does consider us Champions,” she said, expressing appreciation to everyone who participated in the study and helped ensure its success.
“As champions, we were able to make a great thing happen. I know for a fact that we were the first site to be successful in acquiring more than the number of participants we needed to be successful. That is directly because of the work that our group did and, again, thank you very much for your efforts,” she said in a letter to participants.
Now, Ms. Ramsey is asking for help in identifying possible teams or team leaders for the upcoming Relay For Life in an effort to make it successful again this year.
Relay For Life teams can be comprised of individuals, groups of family and friends, church groups, social or civic clubs and even groups of co-workers.
The next Relay For Life meeting will be held Monday, March 4, at Volunteer Hospital in the cafeteria at 6 p.m.
Anyone who is interested in leading a team is asked to ACS representative Elizabeth Gurley with any questions or suggestions.  She may be contacted by email at Elizabeth.Gurley@cancer.org or by phone at (731) 415-3099. Published in The WCP 2.12.13
