Panel passes bill to raise dropout age

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A House panel has approved a bill that would require Kentucky students to remain in school until age 18. Students can currently leave school at 16.
Democratic Rep. Jeff Greer, sponsor of the bill, told the House Committee on Education the proposal would save money. He said more people with high school diplomas will lessen the number on public assistance and in prison.
Two lawmakers opposed the measure, citing concerns about cost and effectiveness.
The bill calls for the dropout age to increase gradually, from 17 in 2017 to 18 the following year.
