Nutrition program planned at UTM

The Joe and Pat Johnson Nutrition Symposium will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. March 1 in Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center on the main campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Up-to-date research findings and information on various nutrition topics of interest to the nutrition professional will be presented.
Rick Canada, M.S., director of nutrition, physical activity and obesity for Tennessee Department of Health, will present “The Childhood Obesity Epidemic in Tennessee.”
Jane Nuckolls, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., clinical nutrition manager with Methodist Healthcare Hospital, will present “The Role of the RD in Nutrition Issue Advocacy.”
Sharon Thornton, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., of Thornton Dietician Consultants will present “Intuitive Eating ... Do I Have It Or Not?”
Dietetic intern presentations include: “Albumin: Not An Accurate Marker of Nutritional Status”; “Vitamin D and Its Role in Health”; “Use of Nutritive and Nonnutritive Sweeteners”; “Benefits of Probiotics”; “Nutrition and the Aging Older Adult”; and “Nutrition in Adult and Childhood Cancer: Role of Carcinogens and Anti-Carcinogens.”
This five-hour workshop conforms to guidelines for continuing education units (CEUs). Attendance at the entire workshop carries .5 CEU credits. CEUs and a certificate of completion from the University of Tennessee at Martin will be awarded at the conclusion of the program. Registered dieticians and dietetic technicians can earn 5.0 CPE hours.
The registration fee to attend is $25 and includes material handouts, refreshment breaks and lunch.
