Seniors pave way
for UTM women

UT Martin seniors Shelby Crawford and Rickiesha Bryant came up big on Senior Day.
Crawford finished the game with a career-high 11 points and five rebounds, while Bryant recorded her sixth-career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead UTM to a 75-61 victory over visiting Southeast Missouri State in the Elam Center Saturday afternoon.
Juniors Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler tossed in 27 and 23 points, respectively. Newsome is now UT Martin’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,764 points.
SEMO was led by Bailie Roberts with 18 points. Kara Wright scored 15 points, while Patricia Mack had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Despite Mack’s effort, UTM won the battle on the boards, 45-34. UT Martin cashed in at the free throw line, making 18-of-24 attempts. The Skyhawks also scored 22 points in the paint, 29 points off turnovers and 20 second-chance points.
The Skyhawks are now 7-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 12-14 overall. The Skyhawks will return to action tonight at Tennessee State in Nashville. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Skyhawk men
fall to SEMO

Terence Smith poured in a game-high 26 points, but UT Martin suffered a 96-74 loss to Southeast Missouri in men’s basketball action Saturday at the Elam Center.
Smith, whose 26 points eclipsed his career-high of 20 points set twice during his freshman season, also set career-bests in field goals made (nine) and attempted (16) while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Mike Liabo added 15 points for the Skyhawks (7-18, 4-9 OVC), while Myles Taylor just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman BJ McLaughlin set a new career-high with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 11 minutes off the bench to round out the double-figure scorers for UT Martin, who also received eight points and eight rebounds out of the team’s lone senior Jeremy Washington on Senior Day.
Marland Smith (22 points), Nick Niemczyk (21) and Lucas Nutt (20) led the Redhawks, who hit 10-of-16 three-point attempts in the first half. Nino Johnson compiled game-highs of 11 rebounds and five blocks for Southeast Missouri (14-13, 6-7 OVC).
Martin returns to action Thursday when it travels to OVC rival Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
