Obion County Emergency Man-agement director Danny Jowers kneels to speak with students during a tornado drill this morning at Lake Road Elementary School near Union City. He is conducting drills at schools throughout the county this week as part of the observance of Tennessee Severe Weather Awareness Week, which runs through Saturday. He also plans to visit local daycare facilities and nursing homes to go over their plans for a severe weather incident, conduct communications checks with various departments and state agencies, perform generator checks and activate the emergency operations center on a test basis. Local residents are being urged to check the batteries in their weather radios and make sure they have plans in place for severe weather incidents. All this week, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, National Weather Service, Tennessee Association of Broadcasters and other supporting groups are conducting educational activities and drills to help people prepare for tornadoes, damaging winds, flash floods, lightning and hail. |
