Robbery thwarted

An apparent robbery attempt at a Union City business was foiled Wednesday night when an alert store employee noticed suspicious activity.
The incident occurred at La Michoacana Mexican Grocery at 1207 East Main St., according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police responded at 9:01 p.m. to a panic alarm at the store and arrived to find manager Tomas Humberto inside with the door locked. He told police he had been in the area of the cash register and saw on store video from outside the building that people were trying to enter a side door. When he saw them, he ran around the counter and locked the front door.
Seconds later, the would-be intruders came to the front door to apparently try to get inside, but they realized the door was locked and ran away. Store video showed one of them had a pistol — which appeared light colored, possibly stainless or chrome — in his hand, according to the report.
The Mexican grocery store has been robbed by armed intruders twice in recent months — Dec. 19, 2012, and Oct. 24, 2012, both also Wednesday nights.
