UTM softball team
in Ole Miss tourney

The UT Martin softball team will play in its third consecutive tournament this weekend as it makes the three-hour trek to Oxford, Miss., to play in the Red and Blue Classic at Ole Miss.
UT Martin was to play two games today, two Saturday and one game Sunday. And for the third consecutive weekend, UT Martin head coach Donley Canary says his team will face some pretty tough competition.
“We have Ole Miss from the SEC, McNeese State who went to the NCAA this past year, Mississippi Valley State who has been to the NCAA Tournament before, Middle Tennessee who is always tough, and Drake, a strong Missouri Valley Conference team,” Canary claimed.
The Skyhawks enter the tournament with a 5-3 record after playing in the Jimmy John’s Lions Classic at Southeastern Louisiana and the Kennesaw State Classic in Woodstock, Ga.

The Skyhawks are scheduled to open a seven-game homestand today.

Lady Vols perfect
with 7th shutout

Cathedra City, Calif. — Madison Shipman had a solo homer and scored three times to back Ivy Renfroe’s six-strikeout shutout as the No. 4/4 Tennessee softball team took a 5-0 win over Cal State Fullerton in Thursday night’s late game in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Lady Vols (12-0) notched their seventh shutout of the season in the win over the Titans (4-7). Shipman went 2-for-3 with the solo blast and three runs scored. Kat Dotson was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one double. Rainey Gaffin went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double.
Ivy Renfroe, the former TCA prep standout, improved to 3-0 on the year with a dominant outing in the circle.
She fanned six over seven shutout innings and 71 of her 98 pitches were for strikes.
Tennessee continues its play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with two games today at Big League Dreams’ Wrigley Field. UT will face Northwestern (3-6) at 1 p.m. PT (3 p.m. CST) before taking on No. 16/13 UCLA at 5:30.
The Lady Vols open their 2013 home schedule at Lee Stadium against Lipscomb on Tuesday. The home opener will feature free reserved bleacher backs for kids 12 and under based on availability.
