Middleton earns
date with UC girls

Union City’s sectional opponent Saturday night will not be an unfamiliar one.
Middleton, which played and lost to the Lady Tornadoes 42-34 in the Westview Thanksgiving Classic in November, lost the Region 8A championship game to Madison 41-39 Thursday night and will come to UC for a 7 p.m. Class 1A matchup.
The Lady Tigers will bring a 22-10 record into the contest.
Middleton had beaten Madison three times this season — all by double figures — before losing Wednesday’s title game on a buzzer-beating layup by Taylor Davis.
Madison (24-10) will now host Lake County (16-11) in another sectional game.
All Saturday night winners will advance to the state tournament in Murfreesboro, beginning on Wednesday.
The Messenger will publish a preview on Saturday’s UC-Middleton matchup in Friday’s edition.

Skyhawks’ Newsome
again lauded by OVC

UT Martin junior guard Jasmine Newsome has been named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference and College Sports Madness’ Mid-Major Player of the Week.
Newsome, from Millington, scored 31 points to lead UTM to a 72-60 victory over Murray State this past Saturday afternoon. It marked her second straight game with 31 points.
She shot 56 percent from three point range and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. She has gone 56-of-60 at the line in her last seven games.
Newsome has moved into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,802 points.
In addition, Newsome will enter tonight’s OVC game against Eastern Illinois at the Elam Center as the nation’s ninth leading scorer (21.9 ppg).
This is the sixth time this season Newsome has been named the Player of the Week.

UT Martin baseball
pushed to March 20

UT Martin’s baseball game against Evansville scheduled for Tuesday was rained out.
A make-up date of March 20 was announced, with the two teams playing at 6 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
The Skyhawks — winners of three straight — will resume action this weekend at home against North Dakota State. Game times for that series are 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by 1 p.m. start times on Saturday and Sunday.
