Handgun carry course offered at UT Martin

A course on the requirements to carry a handgun in the State of Tennessee will be offered March 16 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the University of Tennessee at Martin main campus. Terry Guthrie, a police officer and certified firearms instructor, will teach the course. Participants will be instructed in the laws for the use and state standards for carrying a firearm. The proper way to handle a firearm and training on proper techniques for better shooting accuracy will also be taught. All participants must pass a written and practical test to receive a completion certificate. The state will issue a permit upon receipt of the certificate. Each student must be at least 21 years of age to participate in this specialized training and have no prior felony convictions. All participants are required to bring their own firearm and 50 rounds of ammunition along with hearing and eye protection. Classes include four hours in the classroom and four hours on the range. The course registration fee is $75 per person. This course is sponsored by the UT Martin Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies.
