DSCC's SIFE team to compete in Texas

The Messenger 03.12.08

The Dyersburg State Community College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will compete Monday at the Dallas SIFE USA Regional Competition.
The event is one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.
“The students are excited to attend the SIFE regional competition to demonstrate their impact on the local community through DSCC. They have devoted countless hours participating in these projects and are proud of their achievements,” DSCC SIFE co-advisor Linda Ballard said.
During this academic year, the Dyersburg State SIFE team organized three projects in Tipton and Dyer counties. The team worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as volunteers to prepare tax returns for those who meet the requirements of this free service. The students learned the importance of reintroducing additional funds into the local economy through the earned income tax credit (EIT) provision of the tax code.
To date, the students were able to help residents qualify for $114,874 in EITs. Along with tax preparation, the students advised tax payers of current tax regulations and encouraged direct deposits of their refunds.
Through “Resumé Day” students assisted citizens who wanted to improve their chances in their job search prepare a resumé. In addition, “Cups of Knowledge” were created by the cost accounting students and presented to Children and Family Services in Covington.
In this project, the students first calculated the cost of making single serving size bags of cocoa, sugar-free cocoa, spiced tea and sugar-free spiced tea drink mixes and then prepared them for the children and their families to enjoy.
If Dyersburg State Community College SIFE wins at the Dallas SIFE USA Regional Competition, the team will advance to the 2008 SIFE USA National Exposition, which will be held May 13-15 in Chicago.
SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics.
Their projects are judged on creativity, innovation and effectiveness by business leaders at competitions.
