WUTM FM 90.3, “The Hawk,” the student campus station at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was recently named the Best College Radio Station in the Best in South awards held at the 22nd annual convention of the Southeast Journalism Conference on the campus of the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
The radio station from the University of Mississippi was awarded second place in the competition.
“We are honored that WUTM has been named the best college radio station in the south for 2007,” said Richard Robinson, instructor of communications and faculty adviser for the station. “We’re delighted that our students have been recognized for their hard work and are also appreciative for the support of our listeners, the communications department and the university administration.”
The current executive staff members of WUTM are Stephanie Ryan of Clarksville, program and news director; Lauren Wray of Wingo, Ky., business and traffic director; Beau Grant of Covington, sports and remote broadcast director; and Ben Hogan of Memphis, support and development director.
Colleges and universities from the seven-state region attending the event included Arkansas State University, Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Jacksonville State University, Louisiana Tech University, Loyola University-New Orleans, Middle Tennessee State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women, Northwest Mississippi Community College, Samford University, Southeastern Loui-siana University, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Tech University, Troy University, Union University, University of Alabama, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Memphis, University of Mississippi, University of Mont-evallo, University of Southern Mississippi, University of West Alabama and Vanderbilt University.
In addition to current popular music, WUTM airs campus-based programs, including sports broadcasts of UT Martin athletic contests, academic speakers and campus events. Campus news is gathered, written and delivered by communications students.
Three public affairs programs currently air weekly on WUTM. They include “Weakley Word,” hosted by Lauren Wray; “SGA Roundup,” hosted by Stephanie Ryan; and “Skyhawk Update,” hosted by Beau Grant, which features interviews with both coaches and athletes from all UT Martin sports.
