Students gain experience, give new look to campus computer store at UT Martin

Business students at the University of Tennessee at Martin recently took advantage of hands-on learning when they participated in a class project resulting in a new layout for the UT Martin computer store.
Dr. Kay Durden, professor emeritus in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, includes a unit on office layout, ergonomics, budgeting and furniture and equipment selection in her Information Systems 462 Office Management course. This project is an annual component for the course in which students have designed layouts for areas across campus to give them real-world experience.
An employee of the store recommended the computer store in spring 2007.
Three teams of class members submitted designs. The store staff attended the presentations of their designs and was intrigued by the design of one team in particular. After reviewing a survey done in the past and making adjustments to the original design of the team, the store was reconstructed.
“We saw the design layout and knew it would be workable for the store,” said Susan Nanney, computer store director.
Ms. Nanney, along with computer store staff, is pleased with the new design layout. It has opened up the store and will also affect UT Martin’s growth. The new layout will benefit the store by streamlining merchandise, eliminating hidden spaces for security purposes, giving the store a more high-tech feel and providing staff with open work space.
