Bradford breaks up Bennett's no hitter, but Bulldogs prevail
Bradford breaks up Bennett's no hitter, but Bulldogs prevail | Gleason Bulldogs baseball, Gleason High School, Gleason, Tennessee, Colin Bennett, Zach Wallace

Near no-no — Gleason's Colin Bennett, here checking on Reid Cates during action vs. Westview, carried a no hitter through six innings before beating Bradford 5-1 on Thursday.
The one-two punch of Zach Wallace’s bat and Colin Bennett’s arm proved to be a winning combination to lead the Gleason Bulldogs to victory over the Bradford Red Devils in baseball action this past Thursday afternoon at Gleason.
Wallace belted two solo shots and Bennett was working on a no hitter up until the final inning as the Bulldogs handed the visitors from Bradford a 5-1 loss.
Getting a run on the board early, Bulldog sophomore Cody Ezell knocked a triple and Bennett helped himself at the plate. Bennett recorded the RBI on a single to bring in Ezell and give Gleason the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Wallace led off in the second and walloped a deep dinger over the Red Devil center fielder and on over the fence to put Gleason ahead 2-0.
In the third inning, Bennett singled on a grounder. Matt James followed with a line drive hit into left field to advance Bennett. Junior Alex Verdell knocked a fly ball deep into center field to bring Bennett home as the Bulldogs stretched their advantage to 3-0.
Pitching took center stage in the next inning to keep the scoring for both teams at bay, but in the fifth, Wallace came to the plate with the big bat again and hit his second solo home run of the afternoon to put the Dawgs further ahead at 4-0.
Gleason tacked on another run in the sixth when Evan Orr made it safely to first base on a hit. Ezell followed with a line drive single and James connected on a liner that fell in to send Orr across home plate and give the home team the 5-0 advantage.
Through six innings, Bennett puzzled the Bradford batters and held on to a no hitter supported by eight strikeouts, but even though Bradford recorded two hits and a run in the seventh, the Bulldogs had plenty of cushion on the scoreboard to hold off the Devils for the 5-1 win.
