Extra base hits fuel Lady Dawg win
The Gleason Lady Bulldogs used a strong outing on the mound by senior starter Riley Auvenshine and seven extra base hits to earn a split with the Lake County Lady Falcons in doubleheader action Monday at Gleason.
Auvenshine gave up just one hit while striking out six and walking none in a 12-1 four-inning win over the visitors in the second game. Lake County's lone run was unearned.
Lake County took a 5-1 win in the first game of the twinbill.
In Gleason's win, Auvenshine retired the Lady Falcons in order in their first two at-bats.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of LC's silent offense to move in front 4-0 after one inning. Auvenshine ripped a double and Taylor Wharton homered for GHS in the at-bat.
Gleason added two more runs in the second inning as Kayla Goodlow singled and Amy Spain tripled and scored on an error for a 6-0 Lady Dawg lead.
Lake County took advantage of an error and a single to plate a run in the third. Auvenshine recorded half of her six strikeouts in the inning to keep the Lady Falcons at bay.
Gleason took advantage of three LC errors to score two runs on just one hit and push their lead to 8-1 after three innings.
Gleason piled on four more runs in the fourth with a double each from Auvenshine, Taylor Stout and Ashley Coble on the way to the 12-1 victory.
In the first game of the afternoon, Lake County took advantage of five GHS errors to score five unearned runs.
The Lady Falcons wasted no time in taking a lead with three runs in the first inning. Lake County added a run in the second inning for a 4-0 edge.
After a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Lady Falcons and Gleason each scored a run in the fifth to account for all the scoring in the 5-1 Lake County victory.
Coble scored Gleason's only run after singling to open the Lady Dawgs' last at-bat.
