Lions power past Lake County
Racking up 11 runs in the first inning, the Dresden Lions used a two-run home run from Justin Hatler to put the 10-run rule into effect and put the Lake County Falcons away in the sixth inning, 17-7, Monday afternoon in Dresden.
Greg Alderdice led off for the Lions and singled on his first at-bat. He stole second base and made it to third on a wild pitch. A double from Hatler drove him in to put the first run on the board for Dresden. Matt Beaty walked and Eric Evans singled to load the bases. Dwayne Bailey stepped to the plate and singled to score Jonathan Boyd. Hatler ran home on a wild pitch and Dresden jumped ahead, 3-0. Matthew Chappell continued the scoring by knocking a single to drive in another run and make the score 4-0 with no outs on the board. Chris Peeler successfully bunted to make it to first base, Daniel Harris hit a single to score another run and Alderdice doubled to drive in two runs and widen the gap, 7-0. Hatler doubled off Lake County pitcher Seth Hinson and drove in two more runs and Beaty belted a two-run shot to give the Lions an 11-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
The Falcons put two runs on the board in the second inning, but they came on a leadoff single supplemented by four walks to cut the lead to 11-2.
Dresden put four more runs on the board in the third inning on hits from Beaty, Evans, Bailey, Chappell and Harris to take a 15-2 lead.
The Falcons made a comeback in the fifth inning sparked by a homer over the center field fence to bring them closer, 15-7, but Hatler ended the contest with a two-run home run to give the Lions a 17-7 victory over Lake County.
