Lady Lions nip G'field comeback attempt in doubleheader sweep
Sara Reid — Special to the Weakley County Pres
With solid pitching and good run support, the Dresden Lady Lions took both games of a softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Greenfield. Dresden wrapped up the first contest 13-0 in three innings and weathered a fifth-inning Lady Jacket comeback in the second game to take a 6-4 victory. In the first game, Greenfield pitcher Brantley Wiley recorded three strikeouts and Dresden pitcher Brooke Irvine forced three groundouts to end the first inning in a scoreless tie. The second inning brought more of the same as both squads went three up and three down. The Dresden scoring got going in the third, however, as Megan McWherter smacked a leadoff double and Kaci Robbins hit a fly ball into center field to score the run and put the Lady Lions on the board, 1-0. Jessica Parsley hit a fly ball into right field and Erica Glisson followed with a double to bring home two runs and make the score 3-0. Marlee Mason singled and Hannah Wade walked to load the bases. Bridgette Bone drove in two runs and Breanna Arnold singled to bring home another run and put the visitors up 6-0. The hitting streak continued as Irvine doubled to bring in two more runs and Parsley popped up to left field to make the score 9-0. A Glisson bunt turned into a trip to third on an errant throw to first base and two more base runners crossed the plate to increase the lead to 11-0. A Mason popup was dropped and another run scored to put Dresden up 12-0. Mason stole second and third base and came home on a wild pitch to end the scoring at 13-0. Irvine struck out two batters and forced a popup to close out the win. In the second contest, Parsley led off with a single to right field. Glisson successfully laid down a bunt and Mason tripled to center field to drive in two runs and give the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Wade successfully reached first base on a dropped pitch and Catherine VanDyke singled to score Mason and put the Lady Lions up 3-0. Pitcher Melissa Burkeen reached first base on a dropped third strike and Robbins hit a ground ball to third to bring in two runs and increase the Dresden lead to 5-0. The Greenfield offense got going when Wiley singled and Emily Randolph blasted a shot over the left field fence to bring in two runs and close the gap to three runs, 5-2. In the third inning, Dresden put another run on the board when McWherter drove a shot to deep left field and scored on a Robbins single to make the score 6-2 in favor of Dresden. The Lady Lions maintained the four-run edge through the fourth inning, but the Lady Yellowjackets caught fire in the fifth. Morgan Bodkins walked and Wiley doubled to score the run and bring the home team closer, 6-3. Jordan Galey singled to score Wiley and cut the lead to 6-4, but the Dresden defense picked up and the Lady Lions held on for the 6-4 win.
