Lady Chargers lock in district title with win over DC, fall to Camden
Sara Reid — Special to the Weakley County Pres
Scoring all four of their runs in the first inning of play, the Camden Lady Lions held the Westview Lady Chargers to two runs and took a 4-2 victory Monday afternoon in Martin. The Lady Lions collected four runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Chargers were not blanked for the opening frame. Emily Belote singled, reached second base on a passed ball, moved to third on a Sam Giesler groundout and came in to score when Carmesha Owens reached on an error to put the home team on the board, albeit trailing 4-1. Westview pitcher Shanna Chappell allowed a walk and two singles in the top of the second inning, but helped the Lady Chargers escape a bases loaded situation with a strikeout. In the bottom of the second, Shaylon Robb belted a triple to deep center field and Caitlyn Landry laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring Robb home and cut the Camden lead in half, 4-2. Westview had a chance to cut further into its deficit in the bottom of the third with consecutive two-out singles by Giesler and Owens, however both Lady Chargers were stranded on base. As neither team could score any more runs, the focus shifted to the defense and specifically the pitching as both hurlers held the hits to a minimum. As a result, the Camden Lady Lions took home a 4-2 win. On Tuesday against Dyer County, the outcome had more weight as the host Lady Choctaws were a district foe. Westview took care of business with a 4-0 shutout win to clinch the regular season title. The win improved the Lady Chargers' district record to 9-1 and their overall mark to 26-9-1. Westview wasted a chance to take a lead in its first three at-bats. In the first inning, Sam Giesler stroked a two-out double and Carmesha Owens followed with a walk, but the Lady Chargers couldn't push the go-ahead run across. In the second inning, Shaylon Robb led off with a double but got no closer to home plate. In the third, WHS again had two runners on base. With two outs, Giesler was hit by a pitch and Owens singled, but the game remained scoreless. Finally in the fourth inning, the Lady Chargers broke through. Robb opened with a single. McKenzie Norris ripped a one-out single to move Robb to third base. An error put Caitlyn Landry on first and allowed Robb to score and Norris to move to third base. Kelly Gaston put down the sacrifice bunt to plate Norris for a 2-0 Westview advantage. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh inning when Westview doubled its lead. Gaston drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when Emily Belote reached on a fielder's choice. Gaston stole third and scored on Giesler's sac fly. Belote touched home on Owen's fielder's choice for a 4-0 lead. Robb, the WHS starter, gave up a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but notched two of eight total strikeouts for the win.
