Bruceton played the spoiler, ending all chances of an all-Weakley County championship game, but it couldn’t get past Martin National and fell, 12-10, in the final contest of the Cal Ripken 10-and-Under Small State Tournament this past Sunday in Greenfield.
Martin National swept through the double-elimination tournament with an undefeated record on the way to taking the crown. Starting competition this past Thursday afternoon, Martin defeated County Line in three innings, 21-4, before shutting out Bruceton, 3-0, in play this past Saturday to move on to the championship game on Sunday.
The Greenfield All-Stars faced an uphill battle from the very beginning as they fell to Bruceton in their first game on Thursday, 10-5. Greenfield redeemed itself on Saturday by holding on to win 16-15 over County Line, but couldn’t avenge an earlier loss to Bruceton and was eliminated from tournament contention with a 13-7 loss Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Bruceton earned the right to face Martin National in the championship game.
Hot off the win over Greenfield, Bruceton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but saw the advantage quickly disappear as Martin National answered the challenge. Remington Ballard walked to send home a run and Josh Smith singled to tie the game at 4-4. Matthew Dillingham was sent in to pitch for Bruceton, but Cooper Gilliam doubled to bring in two runs and Jordan Hazlewood tripled to send in another run and give Martin National the 7-4 lead after one inning.
In the top of the second, Austin Harrison led off with a double for Bruceton. After a walk was issued, Dalton Davis grounded into right field to send in a run. Hunter Smith doubled and two runs scored on an errant throw to first to tie the game at 7-all.
Martin National answered in the bottom of the inning with two straight singles from Brett Covington and Jared Wortham. Jason Smith reached to load the bases and Josh Smith singled to drive in two runs and give Martin National the 9-7 lead after two.
Bruceton failed to score any runs in the third inning, but Martin National tacked on another run when Covington doubled into the left field gap to send home River Pascall and put Martin National up 10-7.
In the fourth inning, Bruceton scored on a wild pitch and cut the lead to 10-8, but Martin National put two more runs on the board on singles from Tucker Bigham and Hazlewood to take a 12-8 lead after four.
Bruceton added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Martin National advantage.
With the victory, Martin National will now play at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 11 at Marshall County against Nashville.
Champs — Martin National team members are Cooper Gilliam, Remington Ballard, Josh Smith, Jordan Hazlewood, Brett Covington, Jared Wortham, Jason Smith, River Pascall, Tucker Bigham, Johnathan Yoesel, Kevon Hess and coaches Brian Campbell and Wade Bigham
