Erin Driskell, a three-time all-conference and two-time all-state outfielder from Glenwood High School in Chatham, Ill., will join the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team for the spring 2009 season.
Head coach Donley Canary announced recently that Driskell signed a scholarship to continue her softball career with the Skyhawks.
“Erin is a left-handed hitting outfielder with a lot of speed,” Canary said. “She also has the ability to pitch.”
Driskell helped lead Glenwood to three consecutive conference championships from 2005-07. She played center field and pitched for Vonder Edgar. She also has a lengthy summer softball resume which includes eight years of experience with the Xplosion out of Chatham, Ill.
While Driskell hits from the left side, she throws with her right.
“We will look at her this fall to see if she can play both positions at the Division I level,” Canary said. “She brings a threat of speed and base stealing ability to our lineup. She will challenge for a starting position this spring as a freshman.”
Driskell, the daughter of Roger and Lynn Driskell, plans to major in dietetics at UT Martin.
“I decided on UT Martin because they have a good softball program and they offer the major I wanted,” Driskell said.
The Skyhawks finished the 2008 season with a 28-27 overall record. Canary fielded one of the youngest teams in the nation this past season. With the loss of only one senior and the addition of Driskell and some top recruits, the Skyhawks stand to be very experienced contenders in the OVC race next season.
