The Westview Lady Chargers soccer team opened its 2008 season with a 3-0 win over district foe Dyer County Lady Choctaws on Tuesday in Newbern.
The Lady Chargers struck first with a shot from the right side from sophomore Shaylon Robb. Robb, who did not participate in soccer at the high school level her freshman season, fired a crossing shot that hit the opposite side of the net just out of the reach of the goalie. The Robb goal was the only scoring in the first half. Thanks to stellar defense in front of her, WHS goalie Macy Vincent did not have to stop a shot in the half.
In the second half, the Lady Chargers came out strong moving the ball at will against the Dyer County defense. Westview got its second goal from junior Amanda Crowe and sophomore Melissa Johnson finished off the scoring for the Lady Chargers late in the second half
The stingy Lady Chargers did a great job of keeping the ball off of Dyer County’s offensive end of the field. Westview limited the Lady Choctaws to just one shot on goal the entire game.
WHS head coach Stan Vickers stated that he was proud of the way the team moved the ball around the field and hopes that it will continue this Thursday when the Lady Chargers take on Liberty Technology in Jackson. Game time is 5 p.m.
Vickers tabbed Olivia Baltz as his WHS Lady Charger player of the game for her tenacious play at defense, which helped to keep the Dyer County offense at bay for 80 minutes.
