Last season Mitchell appeared in and started all 30 games of the 2007-08, averaging 9.2 points per game while also pulling down 6.8 rebounds a night. Mitchell led UT Martin in scoring nine times and led the rebounding effort 18 times throughout the season. On the year, she tallied nine double-doubles. She netted a season high 22 points at home against Central Arkansas and on two occasions — at Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay — she had 18 rebounds. Mitchell’s 12 blocked shots was good enough for second on the team, with a season-high two coming against Austin Peay and at Samford. Mitchell averaged .754 at the free-throw line for the Skyhawks, but went 15-of-16 at the charity strip against Eastern Illinois in the Skyhawks’ road upset of the then No. 1 team in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Mitchell and the rest of the Skyhawks squad will open the 2008-09 season at home against Texas Pan-American. They will then also travel for regional non-conference games at Belmont, Lipscomb and Vanderbilt in addition to a pair of tournaments at Xavier and Ole Miss. UT Martin will also square off with Missouri of the Big XII before moving into the challenging OVC schedule.
Eastern Illinois has been selected to win the 2007-08 Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball title in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. The Panthers received six first place votes and 149 points while Murray State claimed eight first-place nods and 144 points. Southeast Missouri (129 pts.) and Tennessee State (124 pts.) split the remaining six first-place votes for third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Rounding out the poll were Jacksonville State (88 pts.), Morehead State (86 pts.), Tennessee Tech (66 pts.), Eastern Kentucky (59 pts.), Austin Peay (32 pts.) and UT Martin (26 pts).
