His first head coaching position was as the leader of the Dresden High School Lady Lions team in 1999. During his five-year stint at Dresden, the Lady Lions won a district championship and made two substate appearances. Stephenson then took over the head coaching job at Franklin High School in Middle Tennessee, where he led them to their first district championship and substate appearance in 12 years.
Stephenson returned to West Tennessee in 2005 to coach the Westview Lady Chargers, where he is starting his fourth year.
“I’ve learned a lot over the past nine years,” Stephenson recalls. “I can still remember my first win that came against Clarksburg. Anything can happen in high school basketball; I never take a win for granted,” he said.
Growing up the son of a coach, Stephenson says his place is in the gym, doing what he knows and loves best — coaching basketball.
“I love what I do,” he said.
Stephenson is looking to add to his 200 wins this season with the return of his starting lineup from last year’s squad that advanced to the regional semifinals. “We have matured and worked hard over the past year, and hopefully we will continue our success this season. Our district has some of the best teams in the state, so our wins don’t always come easy,” Stephenson added.
Stephenson attributes his wins to the hard-working and talented players he has coached, “I have been very blessed and fortunate to have some really great players and assistant coaches over the years. They are the ones that deserve a lot of the credit for our success.”
The Lady Chargers, under Stephenson’s guidance will return to their home court Tuesday, Dec. 16 when they host Crockett County High School’s Lady Cavaliers.
