Drive and dish — Dresden's Daniel Harris (left) drives into the paint and attracts the attention of Yellowjacket defenders Heath Crouse (center) and Steven Johnson. Harris totaled 18 points, but the Greenfield boys got the win in overtime, 66-64.
Fans definitely got their money's worth when they attended the county clash between the visiting Dresden Lions and the host Greenfield Yellowjackets on Friday night.
The girls game went down to the wire before the Lady Jackets held on for a 47-44 win, while the boys contest needed an overtime to decide the outcome. It was the Greenfield boys hanging on for the 66-64 win as Lion sophomore Daniel Harris came up with a steal in the final seconds of OT and had his halfcourt heave end up off target.
In the boys game, Greenfield, which was playing without the injured Daniel Ricketts, pushed its lead to nine points twice in the third quarter and led 48-43 at the end of the third.
In the fourth, DHS clawed back on top, 49-48, with two free throws from Matt McCulley, who struggled with foul trouble.
The Jackets reeled off a run and moved back on top by seven, 56-49, on a stickback by Wes Clark with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.
Dresden's Eric Evans nailed a 3-pointer to forge a 56-all tie with 1:13 left in the quarter.
GHS guard Jess Castleman drove in and dished to Steven Johnson who gave the Jackets a lead with 50 seconds left in the fourth. Dresden came right back and created a tie on Austin Evans' driving layup at the 35-second mark for a 58-all tie.
Greenfield's Clark had his jumper rattle in and out at the buzzer to bring on the overtime.
In the extra time, Greenfield moved in front by four on two buckets by Heath Crouse, but the Lions came back again.
Austin Evans got a layup and rolled another shot over the rim for a 64-all tie with 10 seconds left. Pressuring in the backcourt, Austin Evans fouled Clark who drilled two free throws with 3.4 seconds left in the OT.
Dresden threw the inbounds pass too long and out of bounds, but Greenfield threw away its ensuing inbounds pass. Daniel Harris intercepted the pass in traffic and managed a long shot at the horn that missed the mark leaving GHS a 66-64 victor.
In the girls game, Greenfield held an early lead but the Lady Lions' defensive pressure caused problems in streaks.
The Lady Jackets were in front 11-7 after a quarter and 23-19 at halftime.
The GHS girls built an 11-point lead early in the fourth, but Dresden rallied. The score was tied three times in the final 3:32 of the game. The final tie came at 44-all on a stickback by Lady Lion Courtney McMillin with 49 seconds left.
Greenfield's Mallory Robinson then hit one freebie for a lead. Amy Reddick missed a trey on the DHS end, and Hannah Rawls grabbed the rebound for the Jackets. Katie McCall added to the GHS lead with two free throws with 12 seconds left.
Dresden's Erica Glisson lost control of the ball on the offensive end as Greenfield held on for the 47-44 victory.
