Though it’s never about district wins, it is always about county pride.
Westview and Dresden faced off for the second time this season and despite both Lion squads having upsets on their minds, the Lady Chargers and Chargers pulled out victories on Dresden’s home court this past Monday night.
The two wins gave Westview a pair of season sweeps over their intracounty foe, but with much more effort required. The visiting Lady Chargers picked up their second win over the Dresden girls by a 51-45 score after taking the first meeting by a 58-36 margin. In boys play, the Chargers pulled away late for a 74-56 win over the Lions after cruising to an 82-52 win in their Nov. 24, 2008 matchup.
In the first contest of the night, the Lady Lions opened with a 4-0 start on buckets provided by Alex Glisson and Marlee Mason. Grace Ann Swaim cut the lead in half with free throws, but Dresden found the range and picked up two 3-pointers from Alex Glisson and Erica Glisson. Amber Nanney made good on a 3-point play and Grace Ann Swaim hit another pair of freebies for WHS, but Dresden led 10-9 at the end of one quarter.
Lady Charger Amber Rechis heated up in the second quarter and put up seven points including a trifecta. Alex Glisson and Jesica Parsley kept Dresden in the game with 3-pointers and at the half the score was deadlocked at 20-all.
Parsley opened the third with a three, but five straight points from Westview gave the Lady Chargers the 25-23 lead. Outscoring the Lady Lions 10-7 for the quarter, Westview led 30-27 at the end of three frames.
The Lady Chargers pushed the lead to six midway through the final quarter, but Dresden refused to go away and continued to knock down shots from outside. Courtney McMillin nailed down a three as did Amy Reddick. Alex Glisson hit a pair from long distance, but the Lady Chargers stayed ahead by going 13 for 16 from the free-throw line. The visitors ran out the clock after a late Dresden run and escaped with a 51-45 win.
Rechis led Westview with 19 points. Grace Ann Swaim scored 16. Alex Glisson put up 14 for the Lady Lions.
In the second contest, Dresden took an early lead in the opening quarter, but Westview finished the stanza on an 11-0 run to lead 18-6 at the end of one.
Behind 10 points from Dillon Gardner, the Chargers increased their lead to 13. Tyler McPeak scored eight points for Dresden, but Westview carried a 39-24 lead into the break.
Fighting back in the third, the Lions were led by Matt McCulley's 11 points. A 3-point play with 1:38 on the clock pulled the Lions within two, 47-45, but the Chargers scored the final four points of the quarter and led 51-45 after three.
The Chargers poured on the points in the fourth, scoring the quarter’s first 11 points, building a double-digit lead and eventually taking the 74-56 victory.
Dillon Gardner led the Chargers with 23 points. Jacob Lloyd had 22 and Davell Lloyd scored 12 for Westview. The Lions had three double-digit scorers too. McPeak was high scorer for Dresden with 19. McCulley had 17 and Daniel Harris put up 11 for the Lions.
