In the wake of school being closed due to ice, the Gleason Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs traveled to McKenzie and made things slippery for the host Rebels, taking two victories in convincing fashion this past Thursday night. The Gleason girls flipped McKenzie’s score in mirror-image fashion, winning 42-24. The Bulldog boys pulled away late from the Rebs, winning 48-33.
The Lady Bulldogs used balanced scoring in the first quarter and stingy defense to pull out to a 14-4 lead at the end of one.
For the second straight quarter, McKenzie put up four points, yet the Lady Bulldogs scored nine to open up a 23-8 halftime advantage.
The Lady Rebels heated up in the third. Travatia Bowen and Zana Carter each posted four points, but Taylor Stout led Gleason with six and the Lady Bulldogs were up 33-19 after three.
Putting the finishing touches on the contest by going eight of 10 from the line in the final quarter, Gleason rolled to a 42-24 win.
Stout led Gleason with 14 points. Kim Edenfield scored 12. Carter put up six for McKenzie.
In the second contest, the Bulldogs used a strong fourth quarter to ultimately pull away from the Rebels.
The first frame showcased low scoring with both teams struggling from the field. Ben Rollins hit a three and Colin Bennett tossed in two free throws, but Gleason trailed 8-5 at the end of one.
Gleason found the range in the second. Rollins scored eight points and Bennett put up seven and the Bulldogs took the lead, 22-20, at the half.
Once again the iron was unkind in the third. Tyler Holt posted all six of McKenzie’s points, but Gleason scored nine and held onto a 31-26 lead after three.
Entering the bonus in the fourth, the Bulldogs tallied 17 points, held the Rebels to just seven and ran away with a 48-33 victory.
Bennett and Rollins had 20 points each for Gleason. Holt scored 14 for the Rebels.
