Late free-throw accuracy lifts Lady Chargers
Sara Reid — Special to the Weakley County Pres
The Westview boys made it a sweep by building an early lead and cruising to a 71-53 victory. The games were played on Saturday night instead of the originally-scheduled previous Tuesday due to the winter storm that swept through the area on Tuesday. Light scored all but two of her team’s 12 first-quarter points, but Amber Rechis and Grace Ann Swaim paced the Lady Chargers with five each and the home team led 14-12 at the end of one. In the second quarter, the scoring was reversed. Light’s seven points made up half of Dyersburg’s 14 and Rechis scored six of Westview’s 12. At the half, the scored was tied at 26. The Lady Trojans opened the third with a 3-pointer to take the lead, but Westview answered the challenge. Grace Ann Swaim took over, scored eight points and led the Lady Chargers to a 38-35 edge after three quarters. Westview entered the bonus in the final quarter, knocked down 13 of 14 from the line and outlasted the Lady Trojans 54-45. Grace Ann Swaim led Westview with 22 points. Rechis scored 17. Light had 22 for Dyersburg. In the second game, the Chargers took a large lead early and weathered a late Trojan storm to win 71-53. Behind Jacob Lloyd’s 10 first-quarter points the Chargers built a 22-12 advantage at the end of one. Lloyd carried over his hot shooting touch from his 31-point performance in Friday night’s win over Gibson County. In the second quarter, the Trojans put up just nine points and Dillon Gardner led Westview with seven and helped the Chargers to a 42-21 halftime advantage. The Trojans scored 12 to Westview’s 18 in the third. The Chargers needed their large cushion as Dyersburg scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to trail 60-48 deep into the final frame. Westview’s first bucket of the quarter came on a 3-point play by Jacob Lloyd at the 3:59 mark. Though the home team was outscored 20-11 for the quarter, it held on to win 71-53. Jacob Lloyd led the Chargers with 21 points. Reid Cates scored 14, Gardner had 12 and Davell Lloyd put up 10. Winn Decker was high scorer for Dyersburg with 16.
