Dyersburg State Community College will host a variety of activities in celebration of the February observance of Black History Month.
All activities are free and open to the public.
All during February, Black History Month displays will be held at three DSCC locations. The Alex Haley Museum will have a display on the Dyersburg campus at the Learning Resource Center (LRC).
The Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County will house the Harriet Tubman display and the Gibson County Center in Trenton will house a display on the Buffalo Soldiers.
The Black History Month celebration kicked off Tuesday morning in the LRC on the Dyersburg campus when Beverly Johnson, program coordinator for the Alex Haley Museum in Henning, made a presentation.
A screening of the 1974 film “Claudine,” followed by a diversity forum, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Room 145 of the Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The event is sponsored by the Minority Association of Successful Students (MASS).
Soul food luncheons will be held at both the Jimmy Naifeh and Gibson County centers. From 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a soul food luncheon and portrayal of Harriet Tubman by Barbara King of Memphis will be held in Room 145 at the Jimmy Naifeh Center. This event is co-sponsored by MASS and DSCC faculty and staff.
The Gibson County Center’s soul food luncheon will feature a video presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers. The event will be from 10:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the commons area.
The Black History Month celebration will conclude with a Gospel Extravaganza at the Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The event will be held in the new Academic Building auditorium beginning at 2 p.m.
