Gibson County pulls away to take 13-AA crown from Lady Chargers
Stephanie Sturgis - Press Sports Editor
The Lady Chargers could not pull off the upset in the tourney championship game, falling to the undefeated Gibson County girls, 74-50. "I think our earlier game (vs. Obion County) took a lot out of us. We weren't as fresh tonight as the game went on," WHS coach Sean Stephenson said. The Lady Chargers will next host Fayette-Ware in the Region 7-AA quarterfinals at 6:30 on Thursday night. Westview got off to a hot start thanks to Amber Rechis drilling three shots from 3-point range in the first quarter. Her third trey put the Lady Chargers on top 13-7 with three minute still to play in the first quarter. Gibson County finished the frame on an 11-2 run. Heather Butler ignited the run with consecutive 3-pointers, part of her 28-point performance. Aubrey Reedy had five points in the spree. After a quarter, Gibson County led 18-15. In addition to tired legs, West-view struggled against Gibson County's pressure and physical play. In a low-scoring second stanza, Butler pitched in seven to key the Lady Pioneers' 29-21 halftime lead. Mid way through the third, WHS cut the gap to four, 31-27, on a Caitlin Campbell layup, but the Pioneers ended the quarter on a 13-3 run for a 44-30 edge. Things snowballed for the Lady Chargers in the fourth as the Pioneers pulled away for the 74-50 victory and the crown.
