Over 288 students and 15 teachers from seven area high schools pre-registered for the 19th Annual Spanish Feria being held today at Dyersburg State Community College.
This year’s pre-registered students and teachers already outnumber last year’s participants.
Students and teachers from Obion County Central High School, Dyer County High School, Crockett County High School, Covington High School, Peabody High School, Humboldt High School and last year’s Grand Premio Winner, Munford High School, will attend the day-long event.
At the Feria, students test their Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge in 18 different areas. Judging categories include arts and crafts, preparation of traditional Spanish dishes, poetry reading, and skits. There will also be vocabulary and writing challenges.
Nineteen judges and 38 volunteers from the DSCC community will be helping run the Feria’s activities. The volunteers are “indeed providing a unique experience for our future students,” said Zaira Garcia, coordinator of International Studies.
The Spanish Feria is one of the many outreach programs which Dyersburg State regularly sponsors as part of its broad mission to increase access to higher education in the area.
