Dyersburg State Community College’s Biology Department will be celebrating Earth Day next week with several activities on the Dyersburg campus and at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County.

On the Dyersburg campus, the activities will include:

• Nature trail cleanup — The Biology Department and Phi Theta Kappa will be working together to do a cleanup and trimming of vegetation along the nature trail on the Dyersburg campus. DSCC associate professor of biology Ken Jones will be leading the project.

• Oak seedling sale — The Biology Department is currently selling willow oak and pin oak seedlings. Seedlings are available for $1 each and may be obtained by contacting Dr. Billy Williams, Ken Jones or Rob Martin at the college.

• West Tennessee wetlands presentation — Pat Patrick of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation will speak April 22 at 10 a.m. in the Learning Resource Center. Ms. Patrick will be speaking on “Water Protection: What Has Been Done and What You Can Do.”

At the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County, events will include:

• West Tennessee wetlands presentation — Dr. Jack Grubaugh of the University of Memphis will speak on “Environmental Management and the Mississippi River” at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The presentation will be held in the auditorium of the Academic Building.

• Tree planting — Plans are in the works for a tree planting at the center with the assistance of biology faculty and members of the DSCC academic honorary society Phi Theta Kappa.

Both of the wetlands presentations are free of charge and open to the public.
