Harris deserved better treatment
To The Editor:
I have been a member of the Obion County Public Library Board for more than 20 years. I have served with many city and county appointed board members in that time.
I want to publicly state what an asset Susan Harris has been to the Obion County Public Library board for the past six years. Mrs. Harris, who currently serves as secretary of the board, has unselfishly given of her time and talent above and beyond what is required while serving in this volunteer position. The OCP Library will not be a better place for her absence.
I understand that the Union City Council has the right under Tennessee Code Annotated No. 10-3-103 (b) (1A) to appoint three members of our sever member board in any political way that they choose. I do not understand that Mrs. Harris was not shown the common courtesy of a phone call about her dismissal from the board.
I was very disturbed that she learned of her dismissal from the Board by reading about it in The Messenger. I think that Mrs. Harris is an asset to our county and deserves recognition for the exemplary service she has given to the community. Numerous boards are appointed by the Union City Council and each member who agrees to serve deserves respect and courtesy.

Smartt column
on the mark

To The Editor:
I think Lisa Smartt is so funny and I agree with many of the things she mentioned in her June 3 column, “The things I’d never write.” Especially her comment about grocery carts full and a person behind them with only a few items and the person with the full cart not even looking behind them.
I always look to see who is behind me in line and if they have only a few items, I let them go before me. And another thing that really gripes me, is when you go to get in the line for 20 items or less and in front of you is a person with a full cart of many more items than 20. Can’t they read?
Also, Lisa mentioned beauty pageants for little children — in many cases — the pageant is really for the mother.
Keep up the good, comical work, Lisa.
