While a Dresden teenager awaits a heart transplant in Nashville, community members are busy tallying the results from Friday fund raisers to help benefit the family.
Zack Terry has been hospitalized since May for dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition which causes enlargement of the heart.
Terry was diagnosed last year when he was a junior at Dresden High School.
His grandfather, Jerry Spain, said on Monday that the weekend was uneventful for the teenager, which is a good thing.
“He’s still playing his Xbox and winning some wars,” Spain said.
During the past two weeks, the Sons of the American Legion took orders for Boston butts and pork loin as an effort to raise money for Terry’s family.
On Friday, The Stable in downtown Martin hosted ‘Grillin’ for Zack.’ Volunteers cooked 125 pieces of chicken and side dishes for a $5 donation.
Plates were sold out by 8 p.m. that evening.
T-shirts commemorating the event were also sold for $10 each at the Dresden and Martin American Legion locations as well as The Stable.
Spain said there are a handful of T-shirts left at the Dresden American Legion location, but sizes are limited.
Volunteer Distributing also offered free beer tastings at tiki huts and prizes during the luau. Terry is the son Tracy Spain-Robbins and Rick Terry.
Cash donations for the Terry family can still be mailed to: Benefit for Zack Terry, c/o Sherri Leggins, 230 S. Lindell St., Martin, TN 38237.
