BUSY DAY FOR MARTIN FIREFIGHTERS – Martin firefighters Freddie Winstead (right, from left) and Jason Hauhe prepped on Wednesday morning for the annual Tuff Man competition in September when the department will defend their title in Bell Buckle. Shortly after practice, the department was called to 115 Walters Ave. for a structure fire. When the department arrived on the scene, heavy smoke was rolling out of the top of the rental home owned by Robbie Sullivan. Within two hours, the MFD extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire that started in the bedroom of the home was undetermined at press time. The tenant told The Press she was getting ready to leave the house when a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the top of the house. She and her three-month-old daughter escaped without injury. The Martin Police Department, Weakley County Ambulance Service and the Weakley County Municipal Electric System also responded. Photos by Elizabeth Lackey
