Two members of the Union City School Board were honored for their service during the Tennessee School Boards Association’s recent Northwest Fall District Meeting, held at Obion County Central High School in Troy.
The district meeting was one of nine similar sessions held annually in each of the TSBA’s development districts.
Ellarine Moses, a member of the Union City Board of Education since 2000, received the Distinguished Service Award at the district meeting. She was among 10 TSBA members honored with the National School Boards Association Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individual participation in NSBA programs as well as local education advocacy.
Union City School Board member Shea Riley III was among the Northwest District school board members who received TSBA Boardsmanship Awards, which are presented to individual board members who have achieved one of five levels of boardsmanship standards. He attained Level IV.
The program is designed to recognize school board members for participation in board activities beyond the local level through a commitment to training, willingness to participate in workshops and a volunteer spirit. The Boardsmanship Award honors not only the quantity but also the quality of participation. Levels I through IV are given at fall district meetings, while Level V Boardsmanship is awarded at the association’s annual convention in November.
During the district meeting, members of the media and an outstanding student were also recognized through TSBA-sponsored awards programs.
The evening’s program included an update on this year’s session of the Tennessee General Assembly; a program on effective boardsmanship through planning, policy and promotion; a session outlining education reform efforts in Tennessee; and a report on the work being done by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE).
