WHS win streak hits three

The Chargers rushed for 306 yards on offense and scored on each of their first six possessions, while the defense never allowed Gibson County to cross midfield, as Westview won its third in a row with a 44-0 dismantling of the winless Pioneers in District 13-AA action Friday night.
DeMarcus Williams ran for 96 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, as Westview improved to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in district play. Gibson County falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the district. The Chargers host another district foe, Obion County Central, at 7:30 on Friday night.
Westview forced six Pioneer punts and allowed just 2-of-9 third-down conversions, one via penalty. During their three-game win streak, the Chargers have stopped their opponents on 7-of-25 third-down attempts.
Westview, which averaged 8.9 yards per carry in the contest, got scoring runs from Tanner Spencer and Abraham Haddad to go along with Williams’ three TDs. Haddad added an 85-yard kickoff return to paydirt to open the second half, and Landon Prather hit a 33-yard field goal to account for the Charger scoring onslaught.
With Westview head coach Don Coady seeking shelter in the press box recovering from illness, the Chargers gave him plenty to feel better about early and often. Jake Vincent recovered a fumble on Gibson County’s second play from scrimmage, and Westview followed with a five-play, 30-yard scoring drive, capped by Spencer’s 8-yard run and Prather’s kick for a quick 7-0 edge.
Another Pioneer possession and another fumble, recovered this time by Colton Nanney, set up a six-play, 46-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard Williams dash to paydirt for a 14-0 lead.
Chevy Taylor’s 23-yard jaunt highlighted the Chargers’ next possession, which Williams topped off with an 11-yard scamper to the end zone for a 21-0 advantage.
Vincent’s first of two sacks on Pioneer quarterback Lee Whitaker derailed Gibson County’s attempted response, and Williams’ workmanlike performance led Westview to its fifth consecutive TD drive. Williams carried four times for 48 yards and finished the eight-play, 71-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run around the left end. A mishandled center-to-holder exchange, perhaps the only WHS miscue of the half, nullified the extra point try to keep Westview’s lead at 34-0.
Will Thompson’s interception near midfield gave the ball back to Westview with time winding down in the half, and four plays later, Prather’s 33-yard field goal kick just edged over the crossbar as time expired to give the hosts a commanding 37-0 halftime advantage.
Haddad, who had routinely pinned the Pioneers deep with his booming kickoffs — the first three of which went for touchbacks, got the opportunity to be on the receiving end to start the second half. And he took full advantage, making the catch at his own 15-yard line and exploding up the middle for 85 yards to the end zone. Prather’s PAT kick split the uprights to round out the Chargers’ 44-0 onslaught.
Westview’s backups nearly tallied another score in the waning moments of the contest after Quentin Walker’s interception set up Westview at its 35. Seven straight carries for 34 total yards by Will Vernon got the Chargers down to the GC 2-yard line before a fumbled snap and a defensive stop ended the game.
