Both Yellowjacket squads came equipped to burn the nets down from long distance, but the host Gleason Lady Bulldogs were able to douse the flames while the Bulldogs fell short of the Greenfield boys’ final total in a split decision this past Monday night in Gleason.
The Lady Dawgs managed a 39-34 win, while the Jackets were victorious, 63-54, in the boys contest.
The combined fire power of Greenfield’s Katie McCall and Jordan Galey from behind the arc produced seven 3-pointers in the first half of the first contest and a five-point lead at the break, but the Lady Bulldogs did not allow a single 3-ball in the second half, knocked down free throws and came back to win, 39-34.
McCall and Galey drilled a 3-pointer each to spark Greenfield to a 6-0 start. Jenna Frazier lit up the scoreboard for Gleason with a shot inside, but McCall hit two more 3-pointers. Kim Edenfield scored on a jumpshot and Sara Hensley connected on a trifecta to pace Gleason, but Greenfield held a 12-7 advantage at the end of one.
While McCall and Galey continued to have the hot hand from long range, Gleason answered the challenge with two 3-pointers from Ashley Coble and one from Elizabeth Terrell. Each squad put up three 3-pointers and 11 points and the Lady Jackets led 23-18 at the half.
Edenfield opened the third with a three to cut the Greenfield lead to two. Emily Randolph answered with a layup for Greenfield, but Frazier hit one of two from the line and cut the Lady Jacket lead to three, 25-22. At the 4:23 mark, Frazier's layup cut the margin to one, but Greenfield pushed its lead back to three, 29-26, on two free throws from Megan Porter and Galey to end the third.
Frazier was fouled and hit one of two from the stripe and Edenfield made good on a layup to tie the contest at 29. With 5:13 left, Randolph knocked down two free throws to put Greenfield up by two, but Frazier swished a three from the top of the key and Gleason took its first lead of the contest and held the Lady Jackets at bay the rest of the way. Hitting seven of eight from the line, Gleason came back to win, 39-34.
Frazier led Gleason with 13 points. Edenfield scored 12. Galey put up 13 for Greenfield and McCall had a dozen points.
In the second contest, five 3-pointers from Wes Clark catapulted Greenfield to a 12-point halftime lead and the visitors withstood a Gleason second-half run to win, 63-54.
The scoring efforts of Clark and Heath Crouse helped Greenfield to an 8-2 start. Austin Perry and Ben Sumner brought Gleason back and a three from Blake Taylor cut the Jacket lead to three, 12-9. Cody Ezell hit a jump shot at the buzzer for the home team, but Greenfield led 12-11 after one.
Clark continued his deadly accuracy from long distance in the second quarter as he knocked down a trio of triples. Jess Castleman hit a pair of threes and Tony Robinson connected on a long ball to lead Greenfield to a 34-22 halftime advantage.
Ben Rollins scored Gleason's first five points of the third and, with help from Sumner, cut the Jacket lead to six, 38-32, but Greenfield went on to carry an eight-point lead into the fourth.
With two free throws from Rollins, the lead was sliced to four, 52-48, early in the fourth, but Castleman nailed a three and Gleason never got closer as the Jackets rolled to a 63-54 win.
Clark led Greenfield with 23 points. Crouse scored 16 and Castleman put up 11. Rollins scored 18 and Sumner had 17 for Gleason.
