Having fallen in their first two contests, the Westview squads ended their play in the Sonic Thanksgiving Classic with two victories this past Saturday.
The Lady Chargers fell by a deuce to Bolton on Friday, but defeated the Liberty Crusaders, 65-51, and the Chargers lost to the Jaguars of Southwind, 77-42, but came back to annihilate Bradford, 62-37.
In the girls game on Saturday, a slow start caused the Lady Chargers to fall behind 8-3 early in the first quarter of their contest. Through the first four minutes, Westview’s points came at the line and two from Rechis cut the lead to 8-5. Sara Olds scored the first field goal of the game at the 1:57 mark, but the Lady Chargers trailed 14-9 after one.
Grace Ann Swaim opened the second with a turnaround and the home team soon entered the bonus. An Amber Rechis 3-pointer cut the lead to two, 18-16, with 2:30 left. Free throws from Rechis cut the lead to one with just seconds remaining and, though the Lady Chargers owned an 11-7 scoring advantage for the quarter, they found themselves behind by one, 21-20, at the half.
Jacey Sims opened the third with a layup to momentarily give Westview the lead, but Ann Jones quickly took it back for the Lady Crusaders. A basket from Breanna Pitcher broke the seal, however, and Westview never trailed again. Led by six points from Sims and five from Pitcher, the Lady Chargers jumped out to a 41-33 lead after three.
Rechis tacked on nine and Taylor Swaim added seven in the fourth as Westview pulled away and won, 65-51.
Keiona Kirby led the Lady Crusaders with 20 points. Ann Jones put up 12. Rechis scored 22 for Westview and Grace Ann Swaim had 11.
In the second game, Bradford rushed to an 8-0 lead, but Jacob Lloyd led the Chargers back to tie it. A floater from the senior gave the Chargers a 10-8 lead. Gentry Hampton drilled a shot to tie the score, but Will Thompson hit a basket in the lane at the buzzer to put the Chargers up 12-10 at the end of one.
Dillon Gardner and Lloyd connected from long distance to extend the lead to six, 18-12, but the Red Devils stayed persistent and found themselves down by four, 24-20, at the half.
The third quarter belonged almost entirely to Antonio Hogard as he put up 12 of Westview’s 20 points in twos, threes and free throws to give the Chargers a 44-29 lead after three quarters.
Further pulling away in the fourth, the Chargers limited the Red Devils to just eight points while scoring 18 and ran away with a 62-37 win.
Williams led the Red Devils with nine points. Hogard was high scorer for the Chargers with 16 and Lloyd scored 12.
