Scam reported

The Messenger, March 22, 2010
A Union City woman wants to make area residents aware of a scam in which the caller poses as a grandchild.
The woman said she received a call last week from a man crying, saying he needed $2,500 so he could get out of jail. He supposedly was in Buffalo, N.Y.
The local resident said she was suspicious of the call and questioned the caller until she could tell it was not her grandson, who was actually on vacation in Florida at the time.
“I wouldn’t have wired the money anyway,” she said, adding she would have first checked through other sources to confirm her grandson was actually in jail.
The strangest thing, though, she said, was that her ex-husband, who is also a Union City resident, received a similar call the same day.
She reported the incident to local police.
