Union City School Board member Curtis McLendon has earned the title Master School Board Member after completing a rigorous list of requirements.
In order to receive this distinction, candidates must achieve the fifth and highest level in the Tennessee School Boards Association’s Boardmanship program.
TSBA President Dawn Robinson presented McLendon with the award at the TSBA’s annual convention banquet, held recently at Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville.
The Boardmanship program is designed to recognize members for participation in board activities, including a commitment to training and a willingness to participate in workshops and conferences.
The program is divided into five levels. To achieve this, school board members must earn at least 250 credits, including attendance in school board activities, participation in leadership conferences and workshops and completion of specific tasks such as meeting with legislators or public speaking to promote his or her own school system. Attending the TSBA annual convention is one way for members to earn the required points for Level V status.
More than 700 board members and other Tennessee school leaders attended the 70th Annual TSBA Convention, where they set the association’s legislative agenda and heard nationally-acclaimed speakers.
The TSBA, a statewide non-profit organization, is a federation of the state’s local school boards.
The TSBA’s mission is to assist its members in effectively governing school districts and to serve as an advocate for the interests of Tennessee’s public school students and school districts.
