Westview edged Dyersburg, 2-0, before knocking out Milan, 7-1, in a pair of elimination games Wednesday night in Brownsville. “We’ve been saying we needed one good game to show what we’re made of. The kids were saying, ‘This is Westview softball.’ We got incredible pitching, fantastic offense and defense tonight,” WHS coach JB Suiter said after the wins. The Lady Chargers will next take on the Crockett County Lady Cavaliers in another must-win game at 5 this afternoon (Thursday) in Brownsville. A win in that game, in addition to guaranteeing a regional berth, immediately advances Westview into the title game against Covington. Against Dyersburg, Shaylon Robb dominated from the mound. The junior struck out eight, gave up four hits and no walks. Kelly Gaston slapped a double down the left field line and scored on Jenna Hazelwood’s groundout for a 1-0 lead in the first. The second WHS run came in the fourth when senior Ashley Bynum singled and was brought home by classmate Shanna Chappell’s single. In the Milan win, the MHS Lady Bulldogs struck first with a run in the inaugural at-bat. Chappell buckled down on the mound and the defense made plays. Hazelwood tripled in a run and scored in the second for a 2-1 WHS lead. The senior combined to drive in three and score three along with several vital defensive plays in the twin wins. The WHS lead expanded to 5-1 after three innings in part due to a two-run double by Mckenzie Norris. Westview added two runs in the fourth thanks to a Robb single and her heady base running. Milan errors contributed to the final two runs.
