The Rising Star award is given annually by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to a business that best exemplifies not only business success, but also an outstanding working relationship with the local SBDC and the use of the services it provides.
In giving the award, the local SBDC is also recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of the business owners and their contribution to the local business and economic environment.
Road Runner Driving Academy was established in July 2007. It is a comprehensive program that teaches its students the skills needed to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and to be employed in the trucking industry.
Classes meet Monday through Saturday. Course work includes assistance in obtaining a learner’s permit, driving on the open road in highway, city and heavy traffic conditions, safe and efficient operation of various types of tractors and trailers, defensive driving techniques, and backing, safety and emergency procedures. Graduates receive a Class A CDL.
In the short time Road Runner Driving Academy has been in business, it has grown significantly. In 2009, Milam opened a second school in Jackson.
Earlier this year, the academy was named Weakley County Business of the Year, an award given by the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce.
Milam credits much of his success to the Small Business Development Center at UT Martin.
“The SBDC offers free, confidential services to all small business owners as well as those who are interested in starting new businesses,” said Milam.
“I first found out about the SBDC through a close friend, and I’ve been meeting regularly with Hollie Holt, SBDC director, and her staff ever since. I would recommend the SBDC to anyone interested in owning a small business one day.”
He added, “Hollie asked if I would accept the honor of the Rising Star Award, and I graciously accepted,” said Milam.
“This award means a lot to me. It’s definitely an honor for them to recognize all of the hard work and dedication that I’ve put into my business and the community. I hope my story is an inspiration to others trying to start their own small business.”
“Richard is extremely deserving of this award, and we at the SBDC are very proud of his success,” said Holt.
