UC summer camps
to focus on softball

The Union City Summer Instructional Program is holding a softball camp next week.
The camp — part of a series of such activities — will take place Monday through Friday at Graham Park. In case of rain, campers will meet at the multi-purpose building at UCHS.
It is open to young ladies in grades 5-8. Camp is to take place from 9 a.m. until noon each day.
Instruction will be provided by the Union City High School softball team’s coaching staff.
Registration forms can be picked up at the Union City Parks and Recreation Department Office on Sunswept Drive.
There is no cost to participate.
Weekly ‘Pop’ outing
decided by scorecad

Poplar Meadows Country Club held its weekly scramble Wed-nesday with the top team shooting an 8-under par and winning via a scorecard playoff.
The winning combination included Roger Tanner, John Hale, Don Lyerly and Wesley Hale.
Also finishing at 8-under was the team of Justin Keathley, Ben Hopkins, Ross Clark and Jacob Dotson.
The scramble begins at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The fee includes dinner.
Anyone interested in participating should call 885-3650 by 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Vanderbilt gunner
headed to USA tryouts

NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt rising junior guard John Jenkins will attend USA Basketball’s World University Games training camp.
The Hendersonville native accepted an invitation to attend the camp, which will be held July 29-Aug. 7 at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
The camp will be used to select the 12-member team that will represent the United States at the 2011 World University Games competition Aug. 13-23 in China.
Jenkins led the Southeastern Conference in 2010-11 with an average 19.5 points per game.

Memphis asst. coach
to trade pros for MSU

MEMPHIS (AP) — NBA assistant Damon Stoudamire will join Memphis Tigers coach Josh Pastner’s staff as an assistant.
Vacancies on the Tigers’ staff were created when Glynn Cyprien left to become an assistant at Texas A&M and Willis Wilson was named head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
