Cody Sandlin, a junior on the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk football team was named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list for place kickers. Sandlin, a Goodlettsville native, led the Skyhawks in scoring as a sophomore. He made 28-of-29 PATs and was 11-of-14 in field goals for a total of 61 points. Sandlin’s longest field goal of the season was a 42-yarder. He also handled kickoffs where he kicked off 44 times for 2,206 total yards, an average of 50.1 yards per kickoff. The CFPA list highlights players whose performance merits recognition heading into the 2011 season. The purpose of the CFPA is to provide the most significantly rigorous conferment in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. The watch lists will include the following categories: quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive line, linebacker, defensive back, place kicker, punter, kickoff returner and punt returner. Along with Sandlin, three other placer kickers — Southeast Missouri State’s Drew Geldbach, Eastern Illinois’ Cameron Berra and Austin Peay’s Stephen Stansell — from the league were also on the watch list. UTM wide receiver Steven Shiver, from Maryville, was also on the CFPA watch list. He led the Skyhawk receivers with 36 catches for 634 yards and five touchdowns. Shiver will enter the season with 73 receptions for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns. He is one of seven UT Martin players ever to catch three touchdown passes in a single game. He etched his name in the record book this past season with the three TD catches in the 52-21 victory over Lambuth on Oct. 21.
