Dr. Jerald Ogg has been appointed University of Tennessee at Martin provost.
The appointment was effective July 1.
Ogg will serve as the second-ranking administrative officer for the campus and continue his role as vice chancellor for academic affairs.
“Dr. Ogg has served well in his current capacity as vice chancellor for academic affairs for the past four years. The change in title and responsibilities is reflective of these successful efforts,” UT Martin Chancellor Tom Rakes said.
The provost reports directly to the chancellor and will collaborate with the chancellor in developing academic and campus priorities and with the vice chancellor for finance and administration in allocating funds to implement these plans.
“I appreciate the chancellor’s confidence, but I see this more as a reflection on the excellent work of the faculty and staff within the Academic Affairs division,” Ogg said. “I am proud to serve this university and excited about the difference we are making throughout the region.”
Ogg — a former chair of the Department of Communications, dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and interim vice chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs — holds a doctorate in journalism from Southern Illinois University and a law degree (J.D.) from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He joined the UT Martin faculty in 1987 and has served as director of the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities since September 2000.
He is also a retired Air Force JAG (Judge Advocate General’s Corps) colonel, who served during a 30-year active duty and reserve career. A licensed attorney, he has taught communications law, ethics, public relations, public speaking and advertising at UT Martin. He was selected as a recipient of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award in 1998.
As vice chancellor, Ogg has been instrumental in guiding program and organizational efforts in a period in which the campus has experienced both unprecedented budget challenges and continued record enrollment growth.
He initiated the Maymester term, established a leadership team for the university’s upcoming Southern Association of Colleges and Schools reaffirmation effort and managed the restructuring of five academic departments.
Working with his staff, he was also responsible for opening the UT Martin Women’s Center, increasing the salary increment for newly promoted associate professors and spearheading successful reaccreditation efforts in business, education, engineering and social work.
Ogg also represents the campus in a statewide process for developing transfer paths for 21 academic disciplines, serves as a facilitator for the UT Leadership Institute and is a 2010 graduate of the WestStar regional leadership program.
