Skyhawks will report for practice Thursday The University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk football team will hold its first official practice at 9:15 a.m., Thursday, at Hardy M. Graham Stadium on campus. Players are scheduled to report on Wednesday, and a team meeting is set for 6 p.m. in the Bob Carroll Football Building. Around 95 players are on the preseason camp roster including seniors Kenny Jones (TE) and Kendal Harper (SS) who were named to the 2011 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team. The first practice in full pads is set for Tuesday, Aug. 9. All preseason season practices are open to the public. The Skyhawks open the season Thursday, Sept. 1, at Jacksonville State. The home opener is set for Thursday, Sept. 15 when the Skyhawks host Union College. UTM golfers to gain from Sharon tourney The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team has announced its annual fund-raising golf tournament will take place at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Persimmon Hills Golf Course in Sharon. The registration deadline is Aug. 21 and participants may register at the Persimmon Hills pro-shop or by calling (731) 881-7665. The tournament committee will form the teams by handicap and pair them with current and previous members of the UT Martin golf team. After teams have been organized, no changes or substitutions will be allowed. The field will be limited to the first 108 participants and seniors age 65 and older will be allowed to use the gold tees. Tournament entry fee is $70 and includes one round of golf at Persimmon Hills Golf Course, cart fees and dinner with head coach Jerry Carpenter and members of the Skyhawk golf team. The use of personal golf carts by participants will be allowed and is encouraged as well. Dinner and an after-meal function will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 — the night before the tournament — in the Persimmon Hills Golf Course pro-shop dining area. Guests are welcome to attend the dinner only at a cost of $10 per person. All proceeds from the annual fund-raising tournament will benefit the UT Martin golf program and help defer travel and equipment expenses throughout the season. UK’s Miller makes cut for Team USA entry LEXINGTON (AP) — Kentucky senior Darius Miller has made it past the first round of cuts during tryouts for Team USA’s entry in this summer’s World University Games. Miller was among 14 basketball players named Sunday who are still competing for the 12-player roster, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Miller was among 20 college players invited to Colorado Springs, Colo. The final team will be announced next Sunday. The World University Games will be played Aug. 13-23 in China.
